#MyPhillyPoolTour2024
JULY 8, 2024
We had no idea this fortress-like recreation center existed across the street from LaSalle University. We must’ve passed this dozens of times. Even with GPS we drove around the block to find the pool entrance, which is on Conlyn Street though the rec center building faces Chew.
No changing facilities available at the building near the pool, which was closed to the public except for porta-johns, including one wheelchair-accessible/large-size one. We did not venture over to the larger rec center on Chew Ave, which is wheelchair accessible from the front — so maybe from that side of the rec center a person could wheel over to the pool deck? Best to call first!
The playground was distributing free (brand new) swimsuits for neighborhood kids and adults, which was nice, given the City pool dress code.

Turns out that we arrived on opening day and that is why spirits were so high and so playful.
The pool had about a dozen sturdy chairs for guests to use and a pop up tent in the corner of the pool deck for shade.
The shower at the pool was broken, but spirits were high with the 80 or so kids and a few parents in the pool, throwing a ball around and generally having a great time.
There was also the most powerful spigot sending water into the pool that was like an aquarium massage when I backed up on it, and the guards let me do so without complaint. Kids were throwing around a football and having a great time. Even though it was quite crowded everyone was respectful of each other. Running and jumping were happening but nobody minded.

The structure of this recreation center is actually quite nice. It reminds me of Kingsessing or a slightly less grandiose version of Lee Rec Center in West Philly. Interesting old-school playground that could use some repairs/upkeep. With some TLC the playground and pool area could be a really first class place. New paint on the equipment and the large poetic wall around the block would really make this space stand out. If LaSalle University continues to survive, a partnership between that institution and this playground would be really nice, especially volunteer hours maintaining paint and equipment.
