JULY 22, 2024
My first experience in this pool!
The playground itself is completely ripped apart with signage identifying a large water development project. But there are happy sounds coming from the pool, and I see chairs and umbrellas on the horizon as I approach.
There are lots of kids in the pool, which is rectangular with ladders for entry/exit and depths of 3 to 5 feet. This small-to-medium-sized pool (about the same size as Ford Pool in South Philly, Samuel Rec in NE Philly, or Mill Creek in West) is providing a good time on a Saturday afternoon.
Feltonville is the first pool I visited this season where I saw a lifeguard speaking fluently in Spanish to guests in the pool, which was nice because I have witnessed several language-barrier moments in other Northeast Philly and South Philadelphia pools.
There are no stairs to get onto the pool deck, but there also are no stairs or railings to get in and out of the pool and no wheelchair lift.
All personal belongings, including towels and shoes, have to stay outside of the fenced pool deck, but crates are provided.
The pool water is cool and the children inside are having a great time.
Turns out that the restroom is in the rec center, which — just like at my last stop — requires that I leave the pool area and go down the sidewalk, but thankfully, this one is not nearly as far away from the pool as the one at Piccoli.
Finding the entrance to the rec center was a challenge. It took me a minute to figure out the entrance was not from the playground but on the street side. When I did find the correct door to enter, I had to walk around and figure out that the restrooms were on the second floor. The rec center building was absolutely empty, as far as I could tell, but expansive and well equipped. There is a sign inside the front door indicating that there is a stair lift available to access the upper floors of the building. The women’s restroom has stalls.
Heading back to my car, I met neighbors hacking at weeds along the playground fence with a three-foot machete-style knife. Everyone was in good spirits.
