JULY 21, 2024 – UPATE
I went back today and got into the pool, which was colder than I expected — just what I needed to finally wake me up.
No steps are required to enter the pool deck, but the wheelchair lift is still broken due to a bad battery — which seems to be the theme, whether here or at Bridesburg, Kelly, Mander and other places that have chair lifts but cannot use them.
There are two sets of stairs in the two-foot tot section. The design is very similar to Piccoli.
There were lap lanes here when I was a kid, but there were none this time.
Water depth runs 2 feet to 5 feet. Rectangular pool with little side annex for tots forming a somewhat L-shaped polygon.
When I asked, I was directed to restrooms in the rec center down a way (at least 300 feet) from the pool area, but not nearly so far away as the facilities at Piccoli Pool, which is also in the neighborhood.
The playground sprinkler was not on, but is that old-style sprinkler that I haven’t really seen a lot of recently: A giant post sprinkling water with a low wall around it. (Tustin and MLK have similar sprinklers, and Piccoli has a fancy version with seals shooting in from the outside.)
The women’s restroom did not require stairs to enter, but there were no guardrails in any of the restroom stalls.
Unlike many other playgrounds, the Simpson Rec building looks worse than it did when I was a kid. Except there is a new mural.
Bags are OK to bring in to the pool area, and someone was even playing music on a wireless speaker, which was nice. This was only the second pool I’ve been in all summer with music playing outside of a fitness class. The new normal seems to be lifeguards having a single headphone in one ear while they work.

Have not been to this playground or pool since the 80s, but it’s closed at the moment due to a toilet accident, so I’ll have to try and hit this one up again. The wheelchair lift is broken, but there are steps in the kiddie pool section for entry/exit, and they do have handrails. All seems relatively unchanged from my days there in the 70s and 80s.
Dress code seems relaxed, and so did the people who had (until the recent accident) been enjoying the water.
