#MyPhillyPoolTour2024
July 5, 2024
Today is the anniversary of me moving out of my parents’ house on July 5,1985, so it is always a kind of personal independence day for me. I have two queer friends joining me today, and it is lovely to have company at each of my first few pool destinations.
Shepard’s pool is our first stop — a sweet oasis on the corner with very friendly staff and plenty of adult patrons even during free swim!
As we took our pre-swim showers, I was explaining to my friends about swimming hours/free swim/adult swim, and a very friendly guy came up to let us know that adults are always free to swim here pretty much anytime the pool is open. Not sure if this guy was on staff or just a patron, but he seemed to know what he was talking about. The kids have more regulated times apparently.
Crowd included some punky queer-ish folks, which was nice.
We were allowed to bring our bags inside the pool area, and my friends enjoyed swimming along the center at the maximum depth of about 6 feet.
We did have a moment of difficulty with my friend who has a bad knee, when she attempted to get out of the pool and was unable to pull herself up on the ladder without help from her partner, myself, and a kind-hearted adult patron of the pool. As a result of this situation, I am going back to edit my previous pool reviews and will include in my future posts information about accessibility. I feel like many of the pools I have swam in here in town have had stairs/railings, at least in the shallow/kids section of the pool, but I will now make sure to include that information as I go.
